Peanut: black skinned

Name: Peanut 'black skinned'

 Arachis hypogaea

Origin: South America

Peanuts are actually very easy to grow, even in southern Victoria where I live. The nuts grow under the ground and are harvested in late autumn when the plants start to yellow. After pulling up the plants leave them to dry for a couple of days before pulling the nuts off them to further dry.

I don't know if people who are allergic to peanuts are also allergic to the plants, but it is something to keep in mind.

Black skinned peanuts are slightly sweeter and milder in flavour than the red skinned ones. The plants are not as vigorous as the red also.
