Name: Cucumber: Small Potato

Cucumis sativus

Origin:

A fabulous little cucumber that looks a bit like a potato with its brown, speckly skin. Productive and small vined. Does not like very hot summer weather so will need afternoon shade. I have to grow mine under shadecloth with my very hot summers. Good flavour.

When to sow:After risk of frost has passed in spring. Mid October to December in Southern Australia. Sow directly where they are to grow or sow in punnets and transplant out into the garden when they are big enough to handle. Avoid damaging the roots when transplanting.

Plant Type: Trailing vine

Uses: Eat fresh in salads or sandwiches.

Growing Conditions: Needs good, well drained soil. Water regularly in Summer. Some shade will be required if your summer are hot. Pick when there is still a little background green in the skin and the seeds have not started to toughen.

Grows well on a trellis.

Special Qualities: Very productive.

Seeds:   20 minimum in a packet.
